Mech Assault 2 - When the game launched in November 2002, the original MechAssault was one of the best reasons to get on Xbox Live. This fast-paced arcade-style game puts an accessible spin on the Mech Warrior world with undeniable appeal. Impressive visuals are supported by an excellent range of game modes, including Xbox Live Multiplayer, ensuring players keep coming back. When it comes to sequels, Microsoft and developer Day 1 Studios are working on more than just a "by the numbers" sequel. Mech Assault 2 looks fully loaded, and then some. We spoke with producer TJ Wagner about what to expect from the upcoming game, which will be released later this year.
TJ Wagner: Overall, we are very happy. MechAssault is the second most played game on Xbox Live (since Microsoft launched the service), and feedback on the game in general has been fantastic. Ultimately, developers are judged on how well their product sells, and in the case of Day 1, we're happy with the financial results. We know we can do better and we will.
Mech Assault 2
Where do we want to be better? Whenever a game is released, the development team wishes they had more time to tweak certain aspects of the game. MechAssault is no exception. The single player experience would benefit from more gameplay, while the storytelling needs more impact and polish.
Firstgame Mechassault 2: Lone Wolf, My Favorite Original Xbox Game Ever!
TW: We improved every aspect of the game for MechAssault 2. The game is deeper and requires more skill to play well, but is easy to pick up and play. The new vehicles add to the variety of the game we wanted and give players a significant opportunity to use co-op strategies. At MechAssault, we develop the game engine alongside the product. In MechAssault 2, the engineers had a lot of development time and added some incredible lighting, special effects features and optimizations to make sure the game looks great.
GS: From the beginning of development, what key elements did you think needed to be included in MA2? Why?
TW: It's great to get up close and see the mechanics from a human perspective. We need to get players out of their mechs to experience the power of these giant war machines. The addition of new gameplay elements - such as BattleArmor's ability to hijack enemy mechs or the transport-salvage-distribute ability of VTOL - broadens the appeal of MechAssault 2. Of course, MechAssault 2 will be a great mech game, but we have a lot more to offer. We hope that MechAssault 2 will give players more opportunities for unique tactics and new co-op strategies. So far, our early testing shows that we hit the mark.
TW: We talked a little bit about BattleArmor and the jacking abilities, but it could be a lot more. It can climb buildings with powerful claws, and it is armed with a mortar that requires some skill to use effectively. However, it has a serious influence on the region. Driving a VTOL is unlike anything else in the game. It takes some practice, but it is possible to bring up to two BattleArmors into the heat of battle or into an enemy base. It can also be collected in multiplayer and drop salvage on teammates in need.

Tanks can fight in tighter areas than mechs, and Mech Assault 2 gives players plenty of fun opportunities to show off their co-op skills and hit-and-run tactics. - run. We posted about the Raptor, the new flamethrower. This weapon does close range damage. I'm right. Keep your distance from this Speedster if you can. Other mechanics and vehicles will be discussed in the near future. stay tuned.
TW: You'll see many of your favorites from MechAssault, but we've reworked the graphics and functionality of many of the mechs. Again, more information to follow.
TW: All I can tell you right now is that this is a continuation of the first game. You and your crew - including Natalia and Foster - are stationed on a quiet trading planet when suddenly everything goes awry. Add in a terrifying enemy, new technology, and a little mystery mixed with betrayal, and I've said enough. In the last game, you were stranded on a planet, so in this one, we let you travel a lot more.
TW: Yes! The game looks great. This is a huge upgrade to the MechAssault engine. We're going to push Xbox and push it hard. During the development of a game, it is easy to get used to looking at the graphics and claiming that there is no progress. Last week we launched MechAssault and MechAssault 2. It's a fantastic development. Destruction, lighting, effects, frame rate - everything is better.

GS: Name a common criticism of the first MechAssault and tell us how you solved it in MA2.
MechAssault 2 has a whole new story, but it will still feature tons of giant robots blowing each other up.
TW: The story is thin, you only meet the main characters at the start of the game in the opening cinematic. People want more, so in MechAssault 2 we will tell you the story (in-game) through the characters you ally and meet along the way.
TW: Microsoft Game Studios will make a decision on this, and as far as we know, no decision has been made.

We've seen different aspects of MechAssault 2: Lone Wolf over the past few months, as developer Day 1 Studios ramps up its impressive follow-up to 2002's MechAssault. The original game marks a unique branch of Day One mech family tree by combining the mechs fans know well with accessible arcade-style gameplay and stunningly destructive environments. The sizzling sequel brings it all back with a jaw-dropping makeover, then adds new content to all game modes. While we've already seen the single-player and multiplayer modes we want to see in the sequel, Day One stops today with an updated version of the game that shows us a new multiplayer mode called Conquest, which is sure to which will be an addictive part of the MechAssault 2 online experience.
Conquest mode offers a creative twist to the game's already strong multiplayer mode. Think of the mode as a continuous game of danger, and you will find yourself participating in a competition between five families for control of the galaxy. When you start the game, you choose the house you live in, and you start conquering different planets in the galaxy. One of the many cool twists in the mode is that each planet is associated with a specific type of multiplayer, such as capture the flag. To conquer a planet, you need to make a difference in the genre of the game related to it. As you and your clan conquer the game's many worlds, a large 3D map representing the galaxy will show you how far each clan has progressed, in convenient color-coded form and realistically that time. From the sound of it, depending on who is playing and when they start, the map is in a fairly constant state of change, and the power struggles will continue to be dynamic. As if that wasn't enough to make the experience addictive, Day 1 works to email alerts to you, keeping you updated on the status of your home, even when you're not in the game.
In terms of gameplay, Conquest mode doesn't differ much from the core gameplay of MechAssault 2. As mentioned earlier, each planet has its own unique game type that you need to familiarize yourself with and master in order to succeed in the game. You will meet your roommates throughout the 3D lobby where you will start working as a group business. Like the game's predecessor, you can chat with your crew online before you all leave. We're also happy with some of the minor tweaks implemented in the lobby experience, such as the ability to adjust game types on the fly and customize in-game avatars.
